Hyperhidrosis Treatment

If you suffer from hyperhidrosis, you are familiar with the symptoms of excessive sweating and the discomfort it can cause on a daily basis. To help patients live more comfortably, Alta Vista Dermatology offers hyperhidrosis treatments to the men and women living in Denver, Highlands Ranch, and the surrounding areas of Colorado.

What is Hyperhidrosis?

Hyperhidrosis is a disorder that is characterized by excessive sweating. This sweating most commonly occurs under the arms or on the palms and soles of the feet. Although sweating is a natural function, the excessive sweating caused by hyperhidrosis can cause discomfort and embarrassment. Fortunately, Alta Vista Dermatology offers excessive sweating treatment to help patients overcome these symptoms and live more comfortably.

How is Hyperhidrosis Treated?

For hyperhidrosis that causes severe underarm sweating, we recommend miraDry®. miraDry® is a non-invasive treatment that uses painless electromagnetic energy to eliminate the sweat glands in the armpit. This comfortable procedure lasts about an hour and can provide a significant reduction in underarm sweating after just one treatment. As an added benefit, patients can enjoy a reduction in underarm hair and odor as a result of treatment. For patients who suffer primarily from excessive sweating in the hands and feet, we may recommend BOTOX®.

How Does miraDry® Treat Hyperhidrosis?

Apocrine glands are a type of sweat gland located in the armpit, eyelid, and genital areas. Unlike the more common eccrine sweat glands found on the rest of the body, apocrine glands produce a thicker liquid that triggers a distinct odor (“body odor”) when it comes in contact with bacteria on the skin. miraDry® uses precisely targeted electromagnetic energy to destroy these sweat glands, effectively reducing both sweat and smell. According to a 2013 study published in the Journal of Cosmetic and Laser Therapy, over 80% of patients interviewed after miraDry® treatment experienced, at minimum, a 2-point drop on the hyperhidrosis disease severity scale (HDSS) and 93.8% of patients who had complained of strong body odor reported “good to excellent results” afterward.

miraDry® treatments are non-invasive and completely painless. Those concerned about pain can have their underarms numbed prior to treatment. miraDry® is both long-lasting and cost-effective for the patient, which is why it is our preferred hyperhidrosis treatment.  If you’re looking to dramatically reduce underarm sweat, hair, and body odor, you may be an excellent candidate for miraDry®.

How is BOTOX® Cosmetic Used for Hyperhidrosis Treatment?

BOTOX® has long been used for hyperhidrosis treatment, and we have found success when using it to treat excessive sweating in the hands and feet. To perform this treatment, a few injections of BOTOX® will be made into the palms and the soles of the feet. The BOTOX® formula blocks the nerve signals that activate the sweat glands. As a result, patients achieve an immediate reduction in hyperhidrosis symptoms.

What Results Can I Expect from Hyperhidrosis Treatment?

While miraDry® is our preferred hyperhidrosis treatment, we have found Botox® to be an effective alternative. Both forms of hyperhidrosis treatment provide an instant difference, and you will notice results after just one treatment. For miraDry®, we may recommend two treatment sessions to ensure optimal results. The results from miraDry® are proven to last up to two years, giving you long-lasting relief. BOTOX® also provides instant relief, although the results only last up to six months. After this, regular appointments will be needed to maintain results.
