What is Melasma?
Melasma is a chronic skin condition that causes discolored patches of skin to appear on the face. Although anyone can develop melasma, it is significantly more common in women than in men. Melasma is most frequently caused by hormonal changes, typically as a result of pregnancy or birth control. However, it can also be a result of sun damage. The effects of melasma usually fade after pregnancy or going off of birth control pills, but severe symptoms may lead patients to pursue dermatologic care regardless.
How is Melasma Treated?
Melasma is a sensitive condition that must be gently and professionally treated, or else you run the risk of worsening your condition. In some cases, just a topical medication will be enough to manage symptoms. In more severe cases, we may recommend light chemical peels. Stronger chemical peels and laser treatments are often too harsh to treat melasma. Light chemical peels will gently remove the outermost layer of skin, allowing healthy, new skin to grow in its place. Additionally, microneedling treatments can be effective in reducing melasma symptoms. If microneedling is determined to be beneficial for you, we may recommend Sylfirm X or Morpheus8, two of the leading RF microneedling systems.
How Does RF Microneedling Help Melasma?
RF microneedling, or radiofrequency microneedling, combines the traditional microneedling technique with RF energy. Adding RF energy provides additional rejuvenative properties when applied to the skin tissue. It gently heats the skin to contract and tighten the tissue, while also amplifying the effects of collagen stimulation. We offer both Sylfirm X and Morpheus8 RF microneedling systems to give our patients a wide range of treatment options. They are safe for all skin types while offering a comfortable and effective treatment for melasma symptoms.
What Can I Expect from Melasma Treatment?
The light chemical peels used for melasma treatment are gentle and require very little downtime. We simply recommend that patients limit sun exposure and wear sunscreen immediately following their treatment, as the skin will be very sensitive. While most patients notice results after their first treatment, it’s possible that multiple treatment sessions will be necessary to achieve your desired results.
When microneedling is used for melasma treatment, a topical numbing cream will be applied to the skin prior to treatment. Then, the appropriate RF microneedling device will be used to create tiny wounds in the skin and trigger the body’s healing response that induces collagen production. While the microneedles penetrate the skin, RF energy will be emitted to the surrounding skin tissue. Optimal results are typically seen within 2-3 microneedling treatments, but patients seeking relief from melasma symptoms may benefit from regular RF microneedling treatment sessions.
Are the Results from Melasma Treatment Permanent?
Melasma is a chronic skin condition, meaning that it cannot be cured. While our treatments can provide a significant reduction in the appearance of melasma symptoms, they cannot permanently prevent them. However, the effects of melasma can be effectively managed with regular treatments.
